Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian art form that incorporates elements of sport, music, martial art and dance into a game of physical dialogue and expression. Developed by African slaves in Brazil during the 16th century, Capoeira was designed as a martial art that would be used to fight for freedom. The slaves disguised it as a dance to prevent their owners from discovering that they were training. Binding together elements of sport, music, dance, martial skills and camaraderie, capoeira comprises one of the richest manifestations of Brazilian culture.

We use capoeira as a tool with the objective of engaging people of all ages and capacities in the principles of cooperation, mutual respect, community building, cross cultural learning, personal discipline and presentation of self. Our guiding principle is that every individual is capable of exploring and expanding their physical and psychological horizons through play, music, activity and community.

Taught by Contra Mestre Cabeção & Monitora Areia

Contra Mestre Cabeção has 20 years of experience studying and teaching Capoeira as well as a Bachelors Degree in Physical Education. He started training with Mestre Esquilo in Sete Lagoas, MG, Brasil in June 1996 and has been a dedicated member of this group ever since.

Monitora Areia was first introduced to capoeira in Rochester, NY during her college years. She gained exposure to a few different capoeira groups during her post-graduate travels and eventually settled back home in the Hudson Valley where she joined Cordão de Ouro in September 2009.
